Mostostal Puławy has completed the building of roofed cycling track in Pruszkow. Realization of this building as General Contractor was the next investment at sport building sector that has been performed by our company and also one of the most important successfully finished tasks in our 45 years history.
The opening ceremony of Pruszkow velodrome “BGŻArena” has taken place on the 3rd of September 2008.The opening of BGŻ Arena has been joined with the official beginning of European Championships in Track Cycling, which are the first championships on this new cycling track.
Among the invited guests there were present: Pat McQuide – President of International Cycling Union, Vladimir Holecek – President of European Cycling Union, Mirosław Drzewiecki - Minister of Sport and Tourism, Adam Struzik – Marshal of the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, Piotr Nurowski – President of Polish Olympic Comitee, Jan Starzyński – Pruszkow Mayor and professor Wojciech Zabłocki. The presence of the Olimpic silver medalist in Beijing, the mountain race cyclist, Maja Włoszczowska., has also added splendour to this great event.
BGŻ Arena opening program was full of attractions – the great Polish sportsmen have showed up on the cycling track: Lech Piasecki, Czesław Lang, Grzegorz Krejner and Janusz Kotliński.
Together they have made the first trial lap on the cycling track. Audience could also see the cycling trial leaded by the present World Champion- Rafał Kumorowski, and the show performed by the cyclists on the penny- farthings.
The opening of the velodrome has begun a new great history of Polish cycling. Having at hands this modern and fast track, Polish cycling can strengthen its position on world and European stage, and the track, itself will make more and more young people in our country take up cycling.
Numerous group of Mostostal Puławy employees was present during this very important ceremony. Cutting the ribbon at the official opening was made by invited guests and also by President of Mostostal Puławy – Tadeusz Rybak.
Roofed cycling track in Pruszkow “BGŻ Arena” is one of the most modern sport sites in Poland and in the world. It is situated in Andrzej 1 street, in the area of 4,5 ha next to River Utrata and existing buildings of Pruszkow. This original and futuristic project was made by WAZA Sp. Z o.o. Wojciech Zablocki and Partners. According to Zablocki the shape of the track is related to knight tradition, because hall looks like a helmet of polish hussar.
Main part of Pruszkow velodrome is wooden track, 250 m long and 7,1 wide. The track is covered with the wood of Siberian pine. The wood is unprotected and special climatic conditions need to be preserved inside the hall. The track was designed by Ralf Schurmann- the master of the velodromes’ design. His company, SportBAU Schürmann GmbH with its tradition of three generations of track designers, was the contractor of wooden track.
Special and modern profile of the track let the cyclists achieve even 85 km per hour.
Track was made according to directives and regulations of International Cycling Union (UCI).
BGŻ Arena is now one of the biggest roofed sport object in Poland. This is the center of Polish cycling where national as well as international championships will be organize.
Apart from track cycling there is a lot of other possibilities of functions of the spot. Events like martial arts, fencing or team games can be organized on the object. The velodrome can contain 4 basketball or volleyball filds. The owners of the track hope the BGŻ Arena will be place for fairs, festive, exhibition hall and others. This is also the headquarters of Polish Cycling Federation (PZKol).
The velodrome can accommodate 1700 spectators, another 1300 viewers can take places in additional stands.
The object’s roof in its plan view is a curve that resemble an ellipse, with diameters: 100,0 m and 116,40m. On the hall’s longitudinal axis there is a skylight, about 7 m wide and 5m high.
Taking into consideration the specific character of works and rules of sport sites financing from the national budget, whole venture has been divided into two phases:
The first phase covers performing of incomplete closed state of building.
Technical details of the first phase of work:
- earth work – 48000 m3
- reinforced concrete work – 14000 m3
- roof steel construction weight – 520 tones
- roof covering area– 10800 m2
- external brick walls area – 935 m2
- windows area – 1190 m2
The second phase of building covers performing of all internal installations ( ventilation and air conditioning, plumbing installation, central heating, electric and electronic installations, burning guard system and time measurement system), services for power, water etc., completion work and performing of wooden track.
